CHARLESTON PROGRAM: "FEBRUARY PROGRAM"

With the award season approaching, SMPS wants you to be confident when preparing your project award entry. Join us in Charleston for a panel of past jurors on award selection committees and photographers in the A/E/C community that will share lessons learned when applying for various design awards. You will leave the program with a better understanding on how to properly showcase your projects. The panelists will discuss the content of the submissions as well as selecting high quality imagery.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS
The program will feature Michelle Smyth, Project Architect at McMillan Pazdan Smith, Gary Matson, Columbia based Architectural Photographer, and Luke McCary, Director of Architecture for Pond's Columbia office.

Michelle is a dynamic, enthusiastic Project Architect and has completed a variety of project types in the Charleston Area for nearly 16 years. Michelle's work has included new design projects for schools and community centers as well as some historic renovation work in Downtown Charleston. Because Michelle has been a resident of Peninsular Charleston and due to her seven years of service on the City of Charleston's Design Review Board, she possesses a unique understanding and sympathy to site and context. Additional service in the public realm includes her serving on the James Simons Elementary School Improvement Council, past Secretary for the Hampton Park Terrace Neighborhood, and volunteer for the Charleston Parks Conservancy. Michelle currently is a member of the Charleston Chamber of Commerce and is a member of the Leadership Class of 2019 for the Greater Summerville / Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce. Since joining McMillan Pazdan Smith, Michelle has been focused on projects in the K-12 Studio and has recently led teams for the design of two new high schools in the Lowcountry. Michelle believes educational facilities are some of the community's greatest assets and is passionate about these facilities serving their communities in the best possible way.

Gary is an architectural photographer based in Columbia, South Carolina. Having spent many years building a design business, designing environments and making furniture, he then turned his attention back to an earlier life passion, photography. Drawing on his past experiences, his work combines all the elements of Design, Composition, Lighting and Photography. He knows and understands the impact of representing one’s work in the best way possible and strives to capture that for his clients.

Luke McCary, AIA, LEED AP is Director of Architecture for Pond’s Columbia Office. He has over 15 years of diverse architectural experience, including corporate, municipal and local government with a specialty in education design. He has managed almost 2 million in education projects, with a focus on complex, phased renovation and addition projects. Luke has been involved in all aspects of design, project management and corporate leadership.

Luke has served as a Board Member and President of AIA Columbia as well as a Board Member and President of AIA South Carolina. During his tenure he was part of the planning and implementation of several design awards programs. He is now a Member of the AIA National Strategic Council, Chair of the Strategic Council Best Practices and one of 2 Regional Representatives from the South Atlantic Region. Part of Luke’s role on the Strategic Council is to be involved in the selection process for the highest awards bestowed by AIA including the AIA Firm of the Year Award and the AIA Gold Medal.
