MIDLANDS PROGRAM: "March Meeting: Uncork Great Relationships"

Great relationships between Primes and Sub-Consultants are critical to building business and supporting a profitable bottom line. Join SMPS Palmetto for a program that will begin with a moderated panel of firm leaders from diverse A/E/C companies who will lead a discussion about best practices for building strong teams that can deliver maximum value to clients. Panelists will address today’s competitive market as well how current trends are affecting team composition. Topics include funding sources, sustainability, public private partnerships, integrated project delivery, design-build, minority participation, technology, and more. 

The panel discussion will fuel conversation at the special wine tasting event which follows. Meet new potential partners and sample some great wine as you network with fellow industry professionals. Panelists include Scott Garvin – Garvin Design Group; Bryan Kizer – Stantec; Anthony Lawrence – Brownstone Group; Mike McCarthy – RMF Engineering; and Jason Moore - Rodgers Builders, Inc.

ABOUT OUR PANELISTS

Scott Garvin, AIA, LEED AP - Garvin Design Group

Born and raised in Aiken, Scott graduated from Clemson University in 1984 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Design. He received his Masters in Architecture in 1986 from Clemson and spent a semester in Italy for overseas study. After working in Greenville for a few years, Scott relocated to Columbia and has practiced architecture in the region for more than 30 years. He established Garvin Design Group in 2003. He has been involved in the design and management of more than $900,000,000 worth of projects and launched Garvin Design Group in order to provide client?driven design solutions, utilizing more strategic delivery models. Scott is directly involved with every project with a particular focus on the client’s objectives, schedule, and budget. He also spearheads the corporate business and marketing functions of the firm. Scott has been involved with significant projects around the state, including the USC Strom Thurmond Wellness Center, the revitalization of the Olympia and Granby Mills and Palmetto Compress Warehouse, and the expansion of the Peace Center for the Performing Arts in Greenville. Some of his recent local projects include Halls Chophouse and Hendrix, two of Main Street’s hottest restaurants.

Beyond the studio, he is actively involved in the Executive Association of Greater Columbia, the Vista Guild, and the Clemson Architectural Foundation, among other organizations. Columbia Business Monthly has named Scott among the city’s 50 Most Influential for the past three years running. Scott lives in Lexington with his wife Mary and has four daughters.

Bryan Kizer – Stantec

Bryan leads Stantec’s Charleston Civil Engineering and Landscape Architecture Practice. He has an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from The Citadel and a Masters in Engineering from The University of South Carolina. In addition to his P.E. Bryan has an active Real Estate and Home Builders License has also built two homes one which was featured on HGTV.

During Bryan’s 28 year career he has worked with municipal clients, contractors, architects and developers. Networking, teaming and relationships have been key to his success. Bryan has grown Stantec’s Civil practice in Charleston from 5 employees to 15 employees in the last 6 years and grown revenues from $1.7 million to $5.5 million. Prior to coming to Stantec Bryan was a Senior Engineer with BP Barber in Charleston where he also grew a civil engineering practice from 3 employees to 7 in just a few short years.

Bryan resides in Mount Pleasant with his wife Margaret and their 2 children, Abby 14 and Connor 12.

Anthony Lawrence, AIA, NCARB – Brownstone Group

As Executive Vice President of Brownstone, Anthony leads our Design and Engineering Division and has been tasked with the responsibility of monitoring the efforts of several projects in our multi-faceted firm. Anthony is able to utilize his innate ability to coordinate the varied number of tasks and challenges that this program provides while simultaneously overseeing projects within Brownstone’s design sector. Anthony is the current Secretary and past Chairman of the South Carolina Board of Architectural Examiners and is an active member of the American Institute of Architects and National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. Prior to joining Brownstone in 2011, Lawrence was an integral design team member at Boudreaux Group, Wilbur Smith Associates and GMK Associates.  While at Wilbur Smith, Lawrence led the master planning efforts for one of their largest land planning and infrastructure projects in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. A native of Mississippi, Lawrence earned his Professional Bachelor of Architecture degree from Mississippi State University.

Mike McCarthy – RMF Engineering

Mike has spent 18 years in the AEC industry, starting as a Marketing Assistant in RMF Engineering’s headquarters in Baltimore.  His career path has exposed him to all facets of Marketing and Business Development along the way. He’s worked his way up through the ranks holding titles of Marketing Coordinator and Marketing Manager, to his current position of Client Relations Manager responsible for managing RMF’s corporate BD activities, which includes teaming arrangements and positioning the firm for new work.  

Jason Moore - Rodgers Builders, Inc.

Jason is in Business Development for Rodgers, a Charlotte-based construction company that is ranked among the top 100 construction management firms in the United States. Jason joined Rodgers in 2015 and has 22 years of experience in commercial construction. Jason received his B.S. degree in Political Science from Appalachian State University.

Jason is currently serving on the NAIOP Board of Directors as the Legislative Committee Chair. He is a member of the Executive Council for Mecklenburg County Boy Scouts and serves as a Troop Leader and is a member of the Troop Committee for Scout Troop 256. Jason is a member of the School Leadership Team for Quail Hollow Middle School and served as secretary of the School Leadership Team for Smithfield Elementary School. He is a former member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Board of Advisors (Treasurer), Appalachian State University Chapter.

Jason and his wife Shauna have three children, Cooper (14), Addison (11) and Avery (11).

The ticket price for members and non-members includes lunch.  Due to limited seating, online registration is highly encouraged. A $10 late fee will be incurred for all walk-in registrations. Payment via cash or check is only accepted when paying at the door, and all checks should be made out to: SMPS Palmetto

Refunds will only be granted if cancellation is made within 48 hours of the start time and will only be provided in the form of a credit to another program. No refunds will be made for no-shows. Email info@smpspalmetto.org for substitution or refund requests.
